Photos are often treasured keepsakes we hold onto for life. Snapshots can capture a special moment in time. However, your photos may not always come out exactly the way you would like. Editing software helps the amateur a great deal, allowing you to keep photos you might otherwise have discarded. Many problem photos can be fixed by using editing techniques. The first step is to evaluate the photo. This is how you discover what kind of editing is needed.
Instructions
- 1
Make sure your computer has some type of picture editing software installed on it. If not, get a free download from a reputable site. Picasa, Photoscape and Phixr are free to download and use.
2Bring up a picture that needs editing and look for any flaws. "Red eye" is a common problem in photos of people taken with a flash. The camera flash can give their eyes a red appearance. Many photo editing programs have a red eye removal tool. If yours does not, zoom in on the eyes and fill in the red areas with black or another dark color.
3Crop around the edges of the photo. This trims out any distractions around the object image you want to capture.
4Retouch any blemishes on the photo. This is helpful if you want to smooth out someone's skin tone. It also removes smudges or specks on the photo you wish to remove. Use the photo editing program's "Retouch" tool to clean up blemishes or rough spots in the picture. Click and drag to retouch large sections.
5Change the focus of the image to meet your standards. Sharpening the image will give lines a crisp edge. A soft focus will blend image lines to make the image appear softer. Softer photos create a serene sort of feel, perfect for weddings, photos of children, model shots and close-ups.
