In outdoor photography sunlight is used as the basic source to light subjects. The color, direction, quantity and quality of this lighting source depends on the time of day, weather, season, location and latitude of the sun. These variables give photographers a variety of shooting options and the opportunity to get creative with the powerful light source. Use the sun to your advantage by capturing dramatic natural lighting effects.
More than a Light Source
Aside from changing up shutter speeds, exposure times and lens to create different glows and shading effects in your photos, playing around with the shot's composition and angles can create some great sun effects as well. Using the sun not only as a lighting source, but a subject element in your shots can help to create a whimsical setting. Manipulate how the light is captured to focus on sun beams, sharpen the look of the light source or outline your subject.
Sun Flares
Sun flares are created using wide-angle lenses, shooting towards a strong light source. It is important to shoot directly towards to the sun, angling the camera to be in line with the light source. Using the manual mode of your camera will help to expose the rays or flares of light created from the sun, as opposed to the auto setting, which will attempt to diffuse the lighting for you.
Diffraction
Diffraction plays into the sharpness of an image. Diffraction stars can be created by stopping the lens down, capturing the sun as a sharp, vivid image, instead of a bright, blurred blob. Stars can also be created by focusing the sun through the middle of a holey subject or off the edge of a subject. Shooting wide-open captures the sunlight as more of a disc shape.
Backlighting
Backlighting is when light is sourced from directly behind your subject. Photographing a subject with the sun directly behind itcreates a highlight outlining the subject. If you crop the photo tightly around the subject, and the sun is strong and not diffused by clouds and weather, the result can be a burnt-out border surrounding the subject. The burnt-out effect in back-lit images looks like a white trim or border around the subject.
