Pictures on billboards usually are taken by professional photographers using top-of-the-line equipment. The raw photo is edited for color, format and sizing before it is printed. Billboards must be visible from a distance and the message must be clear. This means the main subject(s) in the photo should be displayed prominently. The designer and/or photographer should know exactly what the final product will look like before going out to shoot.
Instructions
- 1
Design the concept for the billboard. This includes what text to use, positioning of objects/subjects and other elements. Create a few rough sketches usually are created. Use this information during the photo shoot to take the most appropriate photos.
2Prepare the equipment. Use a high-resolution digital SLR camera. For a set-up, use a white backdrop and photo studio lights.
3Dress any models in appropriate clothing. Hire hair and makeup artists to style the models.
4Adjust the camera settings and lens for the appropriate conditions. This depends on what type of photos are required. For example, close-up photos of a face may require a different lens than wide-angle photos.
5Position the models in the poses required by the initial sketches and plan. Take many photos to ensure a good batch of photos. Review the photos before finishing the shoot to make sure you did not miss anything.
6Load the photos onto the computer.
7Edit the photos using a professional photo-editing program. Correct color, touch up blemishes and remove the white background.
8Create a document with the specifications required by the printer of the billboard. This varies depending on the billboard dimensions. Most printers want the document to be formatted in at least 300 DPI (dots per square inch) and CMYK color.
9Compose the final image for the billboard. Add the photo, text and other graphics to create the final product. Have the design team look it over, then send the image to the printers.
