The Konica Corporation was one of the leading manufacturers of cameras and camera equipment. The company was founded in 1873, but in the beginning focused its efforts on making camera accessories. It didn't manufacture its first camera until nearly 30 years later.

Cherry

The first name-brand camera made by Konica was the Cherry, a box-shaped hand camera, which was released in 1903. At the time the company was known as Sakura.

Early Cameras

Early cameras from the company, made before 1910, included the Reflex Prano, a single lens reflex (SLR) camera, Sakura Honor Portable, a box camera and the Pearl, a high-quality SLR camera.

Pearlette

The Pearlette camera was introduced in 1925, while the company was working on making cameras for the Japanese Imperial Navy Command. It was the first camera made by Konica that had a metal body rather than an enamel or wooden body.

Aerial Cameras

The company began making aerial cameras in 1939 and perfected the concept in 1940. These cameras were capable of taking color photographs and were used by the Japanese Army during World War II for surveillance.

1970s

In the 1970s, the company released its first camera under the Konica brand, the C35 EF. The camera came with a built-in flash, which was one of the first of its kind released in Japan. Konica also released the C35 AF, which had automatic focusing.

End of the Line

Konica merged with the Minolta camera company in 2005. In 2006, Konica Minolta ceased making film and digital cameras and sold part of its SLR business to Sony. In 2007, Konica Minolta closed down its photo imaging business. Konica Minolta Holdings continues to manufacture office and medical technology equipment.
