How to Photograph in Poor Light Conditions

Your camera's automatic flash may be a convenient light source, but when you want to take quality photographs in low light environments, the flash isn't your only option. While the burst of brightness you get from a flash floods your subject in artificial light, it may not always be appropriate -- this relatively harsh lighting may be unflattering to your subjects. Instead, manually adjust your camera's settings to optimize its ability to take pictures in low light without introducing new light sources.

Instructions

    1

Turn up your camera's ISO (the method for doing so varies from camera to camera). The ISO dictates your camera's sensitivity to light, making it ideal for low-light environments. Start at 800, then increase by 50 to 100 percent until your camera is taking bright enough pictures. Be warned, however, that the higher your ISO, the grainier your pictures may be when blown up.

    2

Adjust the aperture on your camera lens. The aperture determines how much light enters your camera -- a wide aperture, like f/1.8 or wider, allows in more light, giving you sharper images even in poor light conditions. Unless you are shooting with a tripod, however, you should accompany this technique with a fast camera lens -- like one that can shoot at 1/100 second -- to avoid motion blur in your photos.

    3

Steady your camera using a tripod. When the camera is steadied, you can shoot at slow shutter speeds, allowing you to shoot with a wide aperture and a not-necessarily fast lens.

    4

Turn on your camera's "burst" or "continuous shooting" mode. This mode causes your camera to take multiple photos in quick succession, increasing the likelihood of getting a steady shot even when your ISO is high and your aperture is wide.
