How To Blur a Background in Pictures

A blurred background in a photograph can draw the eye to the subject and add artistic flare to the image. While it is possible to blur a background using photo-editing software, using your camera to blur the background is quite simple. By simply adjusting the aperture, you can move the depth of field closer or farther away from your subject. All SLR and DSLR cameras have the ability to do this.

Instructions

    1

Position your subject as far from any background scenery as space will permit. If your subject is standing directly in front of a building it will be very hard to blur the building.

    2

Set camera to "Aperture Priority Mode." If your camera does not offer an "Aperture Priority Mode" set it to "Manual."

    3

Set your aperture to the widest possible f-setting. Remember that the smaller the f-number, the wider the aperture. On most cameras this will be f1.8.

    4

Set an appropriate shutter speed if you are on "Manual." If your camera is on "Aperture Priority Mode" it will automatically select the best shutter speed.

    5

Point your camera toward your subject and focus on them. You can use auto-focus or you can manually adjust the focus. Once your subject is in focus in the frame press the shutter release button to take the photograph.
