The airbrush is one of the basic tools in a painting application and it complements the standard paint brush tool. The airbrush mimics a spray can that works by spraying scattered pixels of the selected color in a random fashion. This allows you to create some varied tones especially when you mix different colored airbrushes together. You can also add some creative emphasis to photos with this airbrush tool. Microsoft Paint includes this tool in all Windows operating systems so you can directly edit and airbrush photos without any third-party software.
Instructions
- 1
Click on the Start menu and choose the "Run" item. Type "mspaint" and click the "OK" button to launch Microsoft Paint. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, type "mspaint" on the provided search box after you click on the Start orb.
2Open Windows Explorer from the Start menu or desktop and look for the picture that you wish to edit using the airbrush and other tools. Drag the picture file from the window to the Microsoft Paint canvas to open it.
3Click on the "Airbrush" button found on the left toolbox if you are not using Windows 7. The icon looks like a spray can and you can find it in the fifth row. If you are using Windows 7, click on the "Home" tab on the toolbar above and then click the arrow under the "Brushes" icon. Click on the icon that looks like a spray can to activate the airbrush tool.
4Place your mouse cursor anywhere on the photo and click and hold the left mouse button to spray your chosen color. You may change the color by clicking on the corresponding color box on the palette. Use the other tools found in the toolbox to make further edits.
5To use the airbrush as a retouching tool, select the "Color picker" tool which has a color dropper icon. Left-click on the area that you wish to retouch to grab that color so your airbrush can use it. Apply the airbrush in that area lightly to remove any flaws or scratches on the photo.
6Select a smaller airbrush size to do finer retouches without affecting other areas of the photo. In Windows XP and older versions, you can choose from three different sizes just below the toolbar. Windows 7 features more sizes which are all accessible from the "Size" button on the "Home" toolbar. You may use a larger brush as well if you wish to cover more area.
