How to Make a Perspective View with a Camera

Changing to perspective in a photograph is simple to accomplish using tilt and swing and is particularly effective in correcting converging vertical lines on wide-angle shots for architecture. There are four ways to change perspective, including using a large-format film camera with tilt and shift controls, or using an SLR (single-lens reflex) camera with a tilt-shift lens, a tilt-shift adapter or the lens removed just slightly from the lens mount. However you choose to control perspective, the method for doing so is the same.

Instructions

Instructions

    1

Turn the camera on and focus on a subject. Take a photo. Locate the knob on your large-format camera or tilt-shift lens which controls the "shift." Consult your user manual if you are not sure which knob controls shift.

    2

Adjust the knob slowly in one direction. If you are using either a tilt-shift adapter or a tilt-shift lens removed from your camera's lens mount, you must angle the body manually by holding the lens body and pointing it in your chosen direction. Take a photograph.

    3

Adjust the knob in the opposite direction. Take a photo.

    4

Load both photos into your chosen image-editing software. You should notice that in each photo the perspective appears different. In a photo where your lens was angled upward relative to the sensor, you will notice objects appear to be towering and elongated. In photos where your lens was angled downward relative to the sensor, you will see that objects appear very small, as though you were looking at a miniaturized, or model version, of your subject. This second perspective shift is commonly used in cityscapes.

    5

Take one more photo and try to make every vertical line appear perpendicular to the horizon. This may take some trial and error, particularly with the off-the-mount method or the tilt-shift adapter, neither of which have fine-tune controls.
