Self-Portrait Techniques

Capturing yourself in a self-portrait photo can be a complex but highly rewarding challenge. A self-portrait often reveals a lot about your personality, your life and who you really are, so it is important to get it right. There are several lighting, focus and creative compositional techniques that you can use to help you capture the perfect self-portrait.

Using a Mirror

Using a mirror, window or other reflective surface in your photo is a simple way to create an interesting self-portrait. Most likely the camera will appear in this type of self-portrait photo, and you can use it as a prop if you hold it away from your face. When you shoot a photograph using a mirror, make sure that you are in focus before taking the photo.

Standing by a Corner

If you want to shoot your self-portrait standing against a wall or building, you might find that the background is in focus and you are not. To avoid this problem, stand next to the corner of the wall or building rather than in front of it. Focus your camera on the wall or building behind you before positioning yourself even with it and standing by the corner. Using this technique will help you to achieve a solid, sharp focus for your self-portrait.

Shooting Your Shadow

Capturing your shadow creates an intriguing and unusual self-portrait photograph. A plain, simple surface free from patterns and distractions is an ideal background for casting your shadow. The surface you use should be light in order to create a strong contrast against your shadow. Shoot your photograph self-portrait either early in the day or in the late evening when the sun is low, as this provides the optimum light conditions for your shadow photograph.

Using a Flashlight

If you want an up-close and personal self-portrait that focuses only on particular features of your face, use a flashlight. Most modern cameras have a focus mode that focuses only on the closest subjects that it can distinguish. Use this mode to auto-focus the desired features that you wish to highlight for your self-portrait, by shining a flashlight on the part you want in clear focus. For example, if you want your eyes only in sharp focus, shine a flashlight on your eyes, and the camera will focus just on the illuminated part of your face. Make sure that you take the photographs in a dark room and use your camera's flash setting.
