Investing in a versatile set of photography backdrops is essential for professional photographers. It can also be a good investment for hobbyists and amateur photographers. For do-it-yourself photography backdrops, you can make versatile canvases meant for long-term use. Use cheap and easily accessible materials to make solid-colored or tie-dyed backdrops, paintings of nature backgrounds, or green or blue screen backgrounds.
Instructions
- 1
Buy a sheet of large muslin fabric that is at least 8-feet-by-8-feet in size for a single backdrop. This can accommodate up to a full-length shot of a person being photographed. Buy more if you want to create more than one backdrop.
2Place your dye color in a bucket of warm water.
3Fold your muslin fabric, then dip it into the bucket of warm water to begin the tie-dyeing process. Allow it to submerge long enough until you get your desired tie-dye effect. As a guide, you can expect to submerge it for about five minutes. Alternatively, make a solid-colored background from your muslin fabric. Another option is to make different sets of backdrops so you have more colors and backgrounds to choose from.
4Allow your new backdrop to dry completely.
5Place your backdrop on a flat, clean surface, then fold each of its sides. Use a double-edged iron-on sewing tape to secure the folds in their places. These folds are meant to avoid fraying on the edges of your fabric.
6Transfer the backdrop to the ironing board, then start ironing on low heat. This process helps prevent fraying and removes the folds and crimps in your fabric.
7Make another fold at the top part of the fabric to accommodate the backdrop or curtain stick you will use for it. Measure the size of the stick to determine how many inches you need for the fold.
8Place another set of double-edged iron-on sewing tape on the new fold's edges.
9Iron this part of the fabric on the ironing board.
10Insert your backdrop stick into the hole made from the folded top.
11Hang your new backdrop on your photography studio's backdrop wall, or place it like a curtain in one of your windows at home or at the office for an instant photo shoot background.
