How to Create an Image Object

Image objects are used in website and print to add appeal to page design. Small image objects may be used as icons and buttons for website design, whereas you may want to have a larger image object depending on your page design. They are quite easy to create in most photo editing applications. Read on for the steps to creating your own image objects using GIMP, and just consult your help section if you are using another image editing suite.

Instructions

    1
    Open Image

Open your image in GIMP. Once the test image is open, click on the FILTERS TAB and then select MAP and MAP OBJECT to open up the control panel applet.

    2
    Select Object Tyoe

Determine the sort of object you want. In this case I chose a SPHERE. Notice you can select antialiasing, which is a technique for minimizing artifacts when adjusting resolution. This is highly recommended and you can adjust the threshold and depth. The preview works differently then most GIMP previews and you have to click the preview button after each change to see the preview.

    3

Choose a light source or turn the light source off once you select the object. The light source allows you to highlight the object with a point light source or use other sources for different sorts of lighting such as diffused. You may want to turn the light source off if you like the object the way it is. Notice you can also position the light source using the X/Y coordinates.

    4
    Edit Orientation

Select the material and orientation. Material allows you to specify your object background and orientation allows you to move the object to a different position. This is very helpful when laying out images to fit into the page geometry. You can move it off center, or really anywhere on the canvas.

    5
    Final Image

When you are done with all the settings click OK to render the image and then save the image under a different name to retain the integrity of your image archive.

*This one looks almost like a Christmas ornament that you could hang on a tree for next year's office party flyer. Photo objects are fun to experiment with, easy to do and can add value to your webpage or printed documents.
