When you consider what subjects you want to photograph, think about the photographic medium and its uses. The camera can be used as a scientific instrument, for objective exploration or to record and document the world. Recording the multitude of subjects in the natural world and their potential and possibilities can bring new understanding of the world humanity shares with the rest of creation.

Selecting Subjects
- 1
Use the camera as a scientific instrument to record people. Capture ethnology, cultures, customs and folklore and record human behavior and experiences. What you choose to record is the way you participate in the photograph. Your choices speak about you, the photographer.
2Photograph nature subjects. Investigate and record zoological subjects. The world of animals and their behavior is an endless source of subject matter. Botanical subjects reveal plants' protective mechanisms against the elements, botanical propagation and the pure structural beauty of plants and seeds.
3Use your camera as a scientific instrument to record geological formations and ecological and environmental subjects. Show the interdependence and interrelationship of the natural world, of which human beings are a part.
4Study the sciences for ideas and understanding of potential subjects. Take an astronomy course or self-study oceanography or meteorology. Delve into the realms of the researcher, the pioneer and the discoverer.
5Record the human world through the disciplines of archaeology, technology or the complex human organism in the city. Use man-made landscapes such as skylines as subjects.
