How to Do Photography on Canvas

Photography on canvas can be a fairly simply process for anyone with a camera, a computer, a version of Photoshop and an inkjet photo printer. Putting photographs on canvas is primarily a printing process, of which there are two options. You can either purchase your own inkjet canvas and print at home, or you can send your photos to a printer who will gladly print onto canvas for you for a fee. Stretching the canvas can be done at home as well, or the printer can do it for you.

Putting your photographs on canvas is primarily a printing process.

Prepare your photograph using Photoshop. This includes adjusting the colors, size and any additional details you would like to enhance before printing.

Printing on canvas requires a special kind of printer, such as one designed for photos or Fine Art.

Load the special inkjet canvas paper (purchased at the art or photography store) into your inkjet printer

Photo printers come in many sizes for printing 4-by-6-inch photos all the way up to 5-foot-by-5-foot pictures.

Adjust the printer settings within the print dialog box inside of Photoshop. Clicking on "Page Setup" will bring up your settings. You will want to set the paper type to canvas or heavyweight satin matte depending on what options you have available. You may need to check your instruction manual for paper settings specific to the brand of printer you own.

Load the inkjet canvas paper into your printer. Make sure the inkjet canvas texture side is face down or up, depending on your printer's specifications.

Some printers allow you to connect your camera right to them, bypassing the Photoshop step.

Select the print button and hit "OK."

To finish a canvas print, it is often stretched onto traditional wooden canvas stretcher bars.

Check the finished print for color accuracy. You are finished printing.

Photos on canvas can often be painted over with acrylics for extra texture.

Stretch the canvas photo print onto wooden canvas stretcher bars using a staple gun as a finishing touch to display your canvas photo. This step is not required, but gives a finished look to the canvas. Stretcher bars are available at the art store. How to stretch canvas tutorials can be found at the art store or online.
