Family reunions, baptisms and weddings all have one thing in commona group of people, gathered to celebrate the event who want a photograph with which to remember the occasion. A couple of techniques can improve your chance of capturing a memorable shot.
Instructions
- 1
Position everyone yourself. Take control and ask the taller ones to move to the back and the children to sit in the front. Ask some to sit and others to stand. Concentrate on varying the head height of the participants and ask them to squeeze close to one another.
2Take the photo from a unique angle. Resist the urge to grab the camera and stand at the end of the table, taking the typical boring dinner shot. Instead, squat down and capture the group against an interesting backdrop or stand on a chair, and zoom in tight to capture everyones expression.
3Look through your viewfinder carefully. Notice gaps between people and pay special attention to faces; they should all be visible. Make a quick note of the composition.
4Tell some of the group to turn their bodies sideways and their heads back towards you. Group photos have a tendency to resemble police lineups if everyone stands shoulder to shoulder. Have a couple of people kneel, sit on a stool or put their arms around the shoulder of the person next to them.
5Take several photos from a number of angles. When many people are in a shot, there is a greater chance that one or two will be squinting or have their eyes closed. With more shots to choose from later, you can pick the best photograph and have prints made for everyone.
