Shooting on location is preferable for many photographers including landscape, portrait and commercial photographers. You can use various procedures to shoot in natural light if the light is minimal, such as during the early evening, or if the light is too harsh against the subject. The word photography means writing with light, so the art of photography is for the photographer to manipulate the light around him to create an artistic photograph.

Meter and shoot. Shooting in natural light is considered ideal by many photographers as it illuminates the subjects naturally without synthetic colors, and allows you to adjust yourself to the surroundings rather than adjust the surroundings to you. When shooting with natural light, the main things to do are take meter readings, and adjust the aperture and shutter speed of your camera accordingly.
2Use bouncing boards to increase light. To increase natural light, hold reflective bouncing boards at angles to the subject. Use white or metallic board, sheets or posters to reflect already present light onto the subject from a different angle.
3Diffuse sharp sunlight with a screen, umbrella or sheet. When the sun is too strong and causes sharp shadows and white-out, you can diffuse the light to make it softer. You can use various items to filter the light and soften it. A large white sheet, linen stretched over a screen frame or a white umbrella can be used to filter the sun. You can also purchase professional diffusion screens at a photography supply store. When shooting outdoors with screens, have an assistant hold the screen in position.
4Steady your camera on a tripod in low-light situations. If you are shooting at dawn, dusk or an overcast day with heavy clouds and little light, adjust your camera to take in more light. However, the downside to slowing the shutter speed is that it increases blur and shake in a photo because of the longer exposure. To let in more light while maintaining focus, use a tripod to steady the camera. If you do not have a tripod, rest the camera on something sturdy like a stone or lean against a wall to steady your arm and body.
