How to Assemble a Backdrop Support System

In studio photography, a clean, crisp look is essential for professional images. To achieve this, many photographers make use of a seamless backdrop, which is suspended from a backdrop stand. This paper roll serves as a smooth, evenly colored background that can be put behind people or objects. Patterned seamlesses are also available, as are cloth backdrops, which are suspended from the same kind of stand. These backdrops give a more traditional, old-world feel to the images and can be an excellent addition to a studio portrait or group photo.

Instructions

    1

Determine the height and width that you will need the backdrop stand to be. The width is determined by the width of your seamless paper roll, which is sold in 54-inch and 9-foot rolls, or your cloth backdrop, which can be a variety of widths. The height is determined by the height of your subject, be it a flower or a fashion model. For most applications, a 9-foot wide and 8-foot tall stand will be the largest you will need.

    2

Set up the two stands you will be using to support the horizontal beam. Ideally, these would be autopoles, which are a special heavyweight style of stand made specifically to hold a horizontal crossbar. You can also use standard light stands with a pair of photo clamps. Don't raise the poles to full height yet.

    3

Slide your seamless paper, if you are using it, onto the horizontal bar. If you are using a cloth backdrop, you can attach it after you attach the crossbar.

    4

Attach your crossbar to the vertical poles. If you have autopoles, simply lay the bar in the clips it fits into. If you are using light stands, attach the pole to the photoclamps. You can also use science clamps.

    5

Raise the vertical poles. If you have an assistant, raise them together simultaneously. If it's just you, raise the poles in increments, alternating between the two until you have extended them to their full height.

    6

Use sandbags to weigh down the vertical stands to counterbalance the weight of the backdrop and keep them from falling if they are bumped.

    7

Unroll your seamless paper or mount your cloth backdrop. If you need to attach the backdrop to the stand for some reason, use a pair of A-clamps, which can be found at any hardware store.
