Photography Picture Ideas

The only limit to taking creative photographs is your own mind. The world offers limitless venues and scenery in which photographers can delve. The key is to open your mind and begin seeing things in different ways. Don't take for granted the surrounding subjects you see on a daily basis. Look at them in various angles or under different lights. By treating each piece of scenery as a new experience, regardless of how many times you've witnessed it, you have multiple opportunities to capture pictures.

Nature Photography

Many photographers are innately drawn to nature because of its diverse scenery. While photographs of exotic animals are exciting, travelling to foreign lands isn't necessary to beef up your wildlife photography catalog. Take a stroll in your backyard and look closely at the greenery. Flowers can make for excellent photographs. Bright colored insects and butterflies can often be found crawling on plants in the garden. Photographing their workman-like habits offers interesting subject matter. Public parks often feature ponds where ducks and birds are abundant. Capturing these birds in movement can result in dramatic wildlife photography.

Street Photography

The draw of street photography lies in its unscripted nature. Visiting your local farmer's market is one way to introduce yourself to street photography. The relatively controlled environment gives you some idea of what to expect. Keep your camera ready so you can take photographs of interesting characters. Photograph artisans demonstrating their craft, farmers who are restocking woven crates of peaches or children candidly enjoying a candied apple. Also, try exploring the city streets where you live. Look for scenes that are telling and natural. Remember, street photography is not forced. Be ready to snap a picture every time you see a story unfolding.

Portraits

Use props to add variety to portraits.
Use props to add variety to portraits.

Portrait photography is a style in which most people are well acquainted with. We've all had our portraits taken multiple times: at birth, year after year in school and weddings. Taking portraits does not mean you are limited to studios. Choose a friend or two and take them to one of your favorite hang-outs. Make your friends the subject of the picture by having them try different poses. Don't be afraid to incorporate props that fit the surroundings. Sports equipment, musical instruments and children's toys make for interesting props.

Food Photography

We consume food on a daily basis yet, rarely, does it occur to us to photograph what we eat. Fusion cooking, with its eccentric plating and contrasting colors, gives photographers an excellent subject to work with. Taking photographs of decadent chocolate treats and layers of perfectly decorated cakes can be enough to appease a sweet tooth. Classical Thanksgiving day lay-outs with spotless linens and polished silverware can trigger sense of nostalgia in a viewer. Even a detailed look at the flakiness of a croissant can be photographically appealing. With food photography, you're really pitching a product. Make the viewer want to be sitting in front of the plate, fork in hand.
