Prepare the camera for beach photography by adding a reflection-minimizing polarizing filter and a weatherproof rain jacket accessory. Pack clean microfiber towels to wipe sea spray from lenses and camera gear.
2Scan the beach for portrait locations. Sitting on rocks, frolicking at the water's edge or playing in the sand near wild grasses add variety to the beach portraits.
3Pose the family for some of the portraits. Seat adults in the sand while children sit in laps or stand behind the adults. Arrange the family in seated positions around large rock outcroppings. Do these poses first, as children will get sandy, wet and messy during casual portraits.
4Walking, playing and casual poses add spontaneity to family portraits. Have a parent help a child build a sand castle or have a mother walk hand-in-hand with her daughter at the water's edge. A group of children can wiggle their bare toes in the water and giggle.
5Work with the lighting. Frame a setting sun behind the family, or place the family perpendicular to the setting sun to illuminate flowing hair with the warm, red glow of the evening. Reposition anyone squinting into the sun.
