How to Keep a Photo From Fading

Memories may last forever, but photographs can fade -- unless you store and treat them properly. Over time, the dyes used to print photos decay, causing photos to permanently fade. Although this process is inevitable, you can do some things to prolong the life of a photo for up to 100 years or more. Photos that are not treated properly may fade in 25 to 50 years. It is important to preserve your treasured memories for as long as you can.

Instructions

    1

Place photos in photo boxes or storage containers for safekeeping. Place the storage container in a cool, dry and dark closet or storage cabinet, somewhere away from light sources and fluctuating temperatures.

    2

Invest in a good photo album if you want to share your photos with others. Don't use albums that contain acid, adhesive pages or protective sheets. They can cause damage to the photo. Store the album in a cool, dry and dark place in an upright position, the same way you would place a book on a bookshelf.

    3

Use UV protective plexiglass when framing your photos. Hang framed photos out of direct sunlight. Place photos in rooms that do not have many artificial light sources, such as overhead lighting or lamps.

    4

Make high-quality copies of each of your treasured photos. Scan your photos and save them on your computer for a backup digital copy.

    5

Print your photos from your computer using a high-quality photo ink and photo paper. Some photo inks and paper are designed to resist fading.
