Photographs in a newspaper capture the eyes of newspaper readers and help make a connection to the story being read. Local newspaper photographers attend events to take photos of the crowd and people walking around. Although an image of a person may have been taken with the individual's consent, permission still needs to be obtained to use a picture from the newspaper. Pictures in the newspaper are protected by copyright law and must have permission to be copied or used outside of the newspaper publication.
Instructions
- 1
Write down the name of the newspaper publication, as well as the date of the newspaper that the picture is in. Take note of the section and page where the picture appears. Most newspaper publications create digital and folder archives of photos that are published in the newspaper and categorize the pictures according to publication information.
2Obtain the newspaper publication's contact information, such as the address, phone number and email address. Call, email or visit the newspaper and enquire about obtaining, using or purchasing a copy of the picture in the newspaper. Provide the reception or photo archive desk with the photo's publication information for faster service.
3Fill out the required paperwork, such as a photo release form, to obtain or purchase the picture from the newspaper. In most cases, copies of a picture taken by a newspaper staff photographer require the permission from the photographer or newspaper publisher. Once permission is given, the picture is printed in house or sent out to a photo processor.
4Take note of the processing time indicated on the photo release form before calling to inquire about the picture being ready for pick-up. Most newspaper publications contact customers by telephone to inform the customer that the photo ordered is ready for purchase. Take the release form with you to show the reception or photo archive desk in case there is a discrepancy in the order.
5Obtain the photographer's contact information, if the photographer no longer works with the newspaper. Although most large newspaper publications own the rights to published pictures, independent newspapers may not, requiring permission from the photographer to be copied and used. Speak to the newspaper publisher for the photographer's information. Also, contact the Professional Photographers of America and American Society of Media Photographers for assistance.
