Though your film camera might have a built-in light meter, handheld light meters take more precise readings and will allow you to make better exposures. Digital cameras often come with a histogram feature that allows you to adjust your exposure according to the camera's sensor, but a light meter will help you to achieve a better exposure with your first shot. You might have trouble choosing the right light meter when you realize the variety of devices available. Simply focus on your particular needs and interests to find the right light meter for you. Basic light meters often cost under $150, while more advanced models can cost over $700.

Instructions

    1

Look for an incident light meter if you will be shooting your subjects close-up or in a studio. Unlike light meters built into most cameras, incident light meters measure the light that falls on the subject rather than the light that reflects off of the subject. To take a reading with these meters, you must be able to place the meter in the same light as the subject. You will not be able to do this when shooting subjects from far away. If you will be shooting in the studio, however, choose an incident light meter for more accurate readings. You will also need an incident light meter for shooting with flash.

    2

Look for a reflective light meter if you will be shooting your subjects from a distance more often than close up. Reflective light meters measure the light reflecting off of the subject. These meters take less accurate readings than incident meters, but you can use them to take readings on distant subjects.

    3

Look for a combination incident and reflective light meter for greater flexibility. These meters have a sliding plastic hemisphere that can cover or reveal a light sensor. Cover the sensor to take incident readings, and expose it to take reflected readings.

    4

Look for a lightweight, compact meter if you will be shooting outdoors or while traveling or attending events.

    5

Consult customer reviews online for a particular light meter you are considering purchasing, and compare prices at a variety of stores.

    6

Go to a camera supply store and look at the meter in person to see if you feel comfortable with its functions.
