Trying to take photos in places with poor lighting is very challenging. In addition, many such places -- such as inside a gym, or old churches with fragile artwork on the walls -- do not allow for the use of a flash. Fortunately, there are some tips photographers use to get better photos in this situation.

Instructions

    1

Adjust the ISO setting of the camera. The speed of a camera is rated by ISO numbers such as 100, 400 and up, as high as 3200 in some cases. The higher the number, the more sensitive it is to light. Increase this number as needed. Note that higher ISO settings result in additional noise or graininess to your images, so use increases sparingly. Shooting in RAW format can allow you to adjust the images afterward with less impact on the appearance.

    2

Adjust the shutter speed of your camera. The shutter speed controls how long the shutter is held open, allowing in more light. The larger the number, the slower the speed. Play with this a bit, but note that slower speeds can result in blurred images at very slow speeds. Photos shot at slower shutter speeds require a very steady hand.

    3

Adjust the f-stop of your camera. The f-stop is a designation that indicates the size of the aperture. A smaller number like F2.8 is a large opening, which lets more light in, and a large number like F16 is a relatively small opening.
