Adobe Photo Shop Basics

Adobe Photoshop is a program designed to edit and enhance digital photos. The program can seem intimidating at first, because it has so many tools and options. However, for basic photo editing, a few simple tips will enhance virtually any photo and make it look more professional. These are changing brightness and contrast, red-eye removal, hue and saturation, and blending style.

Brightness/Contrast

Many photos can be enhanced simply by adjusting the brightness and contrast. Go to the "Image" menu and click "Adjustments". Choose "Brightness/contrast." Move the sliders for brightness and contrast until you achieve the look you want. Higher contrast will make brights brighter and darks darker. This usually makes the images pop a little more, whereas decreasing the contrast gives a muted effect. Adjusting the brightness can help correct for over or under exposure.

Hue And Saturation

Changing the hue of a photo will change the color tint of the photo. Changing the saturation adjusts how vivid the colors in the photo appear. You can use these tools to make photos appear more vivid or to do colorizing effects. Go the image menu and select "Adjustments." Click "hue/saturation." You can move the sliders around until you achieve the look you want. If you want black and white, set the saturation of the photo to "0." If you want to change the hue of a photo to a single color tint, make sure the "Colorize" box on the right side of the window is checked.

Red-Eye Removal

Red eyes can easily ruin the look of a photo. Even if a photo is carefully posed and has good composition, a subject with red eyes will make the photo look less professional. To remove red eyes, you can use Photoshop's red eye removal tool. Click on the tool that looks like an eye in the left menu. It is in the same tool set as the healing brush -- the icon looks like a bandage -- so you may have to right click on the healing brush and select the red eye tool from there. Once you have clicked on the tool, select the area that you want to remove the red from. Photoshop does the rest.

Blending Style

Photoshop allows the use of layers to add different effects to a photo. Using different blending styles will allow you to change the entire look of a photo with a single click of the mouse. These styles vary, and the best way to figure out what you like and don't like is to scroll through them all to see how they look. Create a duplicate layer of your photo and select the top layer. In the top of the layers window, you can select a different blending mode from a drop-down menu. The default is set to "Normal." You can also adjust the opacity of the layer to lessen the intensity of the effect.
