How to Make Pics With Flashing Lights

Flashing lights can add an artistic effect to any surrounding, whether viewed outside or inside a building. Pictures of flashing lights can be taken inside of a home using a basic set and flashing strobe lights. Objects or people can be placed in the set, then captured with a digital or film camera as they interact with the flashing lights.

Instructions

    1

Decorate the location that will be used for the photo shoot. Hang backdrops and clear the area of any items that will not be part of the shoot such as tables, chairs or picture frames. Once cleared, add in the props you intend to use.

    2

Position the flashing strobe lights that will be part of the shoot around the set. Place a center light in front of the backdrop 2- to 3-feet away. Add any additional lights on the left or right sides of the center light, also at a distance of 2- to 3-feet. Test the lights to ensure they work well.

    3

Place the camera on a camera tripod. Remove the tripod camera plate from the tripod head, and screw it into the bottom of the camera to secure it. Position the camera and the plate back on to the tripod head by setting it into the slot until it snaps back in place.

    4

Set the camera and tripod at an angle that permits all of the background and the subject to be in frame. Avoid capturing the lights in the frame, as this will take away from the illusion of the flashing lights. Compose the shot within the frame once you find the angle you want.

    5

Adjust the camera's settings before shooting the pictures. Single lens reflex cameras (SLRs) should be switched to manual mode, and have an aperture f-stop of f/2.8 to f/5.6 to permit enough light to come through the lens. Set the shutter speed from 250 to 1,000 to capture the lights' speed and action. Photographers can also bracket the shots using these settings. A slower shutter speed such as 30, or even bulb setting, will create light streaks. Digital point-and-shoot cameras that are used should be set to low light or indoor mode.

    6

Station the photographic subject or object in front of the backdrop, and turn the flashing strobe lights on. Turn the main room lights off, then begin taking pictures of the flashing lights and photographic subject continuously. Turn the room lights back on and the flashing lights off once the session has ended. Review the pictures upon completion.
