One of the problems that novice photographers experience is not understanding the language and terminology of photography. What does it mean to "push" the speed? What is "stopping down?" What is "lens flare?" It's hard for novice photographers to get help from more experienced photographers if they don't speak a common language. I told a new photographer once, that his picture would have been better if he had decreased the depth of field. He of course asked, "what is depth of field?" In this article I will explain some key photography terms in relation to camera lenses.

A camera lens is made up of a number of ELEMENTS. In expensive cameras the elements will be made from optical glass and in some inexpensive cameras lenses will be made from polymers. A lens is modeled after the human eye. The front element is kind of like our cornea; be careful not to scratch it. It captures the light and internal elements are used to bend the light and focus it onto the DIGITAL SENSOR or FILM. A lens of 50mm in length is said to have a normal PERSPECTIVE. A LONG focal length lens provides a narrow ANGLE OF VIEW. A lens with a short focal length provides a WIDE ANGLE field of view. A wide-angle lens makes objects appear longer and a TELEPHOTO lens makes objects appear compressed. A 85mm lens is called a PORTRAIT LENS.
2WIDE-ANGLE lens have a FOCAL LENGTH of between 24mm and 35mm. Wide-angle lenses are usually FAST lenses with a wide aperture of f/3.2 or less. They are excellent for scenic views, architecture, group photos, nature photography and many other applications.
3The wider the angle, the more distortion or stretch will occur. A FISHEYE lens takes this to the extreme. Lenses are usually between 12mm and 17mm and give an oval or circular view. These lenses are good for nature photography, real estate and panoramic photography.
4A TELEPHOTO lens is one that has a focal length of 100mm or longer. This one is a 600mm telephoto lens. This is a heavy lens that weighs over 11 lbs. These lenses are almost exclusively used on TRIPODS for sports, nature and photojournalism. Notice the tripod mount is on the lens, which is where you mount the camera, NOT in the camera tripod mount.
5Lenses come in FIXED FOCAL LENGHTS or as VARIABLE FOCAL LENGHTS, which are known as ZOOM lenses. Zoom lenses use sliding elements to adjust the focal length within a RANGE. There are a wide variety of variations. There are lenses that go from 24mm (wide-angle) to 300mm (telephoto). These lenses offer an all-in-one solution, but are heavy. My preference is to have a lens that zooms from 24mm to 85mm and one that zooms from 100mm to 300mm.
