How to Set Dots Per Inch for Printing

Printing photographs requires a much higher count of pixels per inch, also called dots per inch, than simply viewing photographs on a computer screen or transmitting them over the web. The dots per inch, or dpi, value is the measure of the resolution of the image, or how clearly it will display, especially when blown up to larger sizes. To set dots per inch for printing, you will need image editing software. Adobe Photoshop is a good investment and the industry standard, but other image editing software will work as well.

Instructions

    1

Ready the image for printing that you wish to set the dots per inch value for. This tutorial is using Adobe Photoshop, but the steps will be similar in other image editing software such as the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP).

    2

Find the "Image" tab in the task bar in the top left hand corner of your screen. Click on it to open the drop-down menu.

    3

Select the "Image size..." option from the drop-down menu and click. You will now be taken to a window displaying all manner of information about your image. You are concerned with two factors here. The first is the "Resolution," which is your dots per inch value that needs to be set to the right dpi for printing. The second is the dimensions of the image, shown by default in "Width" and "Height," in inches.

    4

Uncheck the "Resample Image" tab before changing your dots per inch value. You don't want to be changing the content of your image yet, just the way Adobe Photoshop recognizes it.

    5

Change the "Resolution" variable, set to pixels/inch by default, to 300. The 300 dots per inch is the standard value to be used in printing. As you change the dots per inch to 300, if it is not at this value already, the image height and width will change on their own. Now that your dots per inch value is correctly set for printing, you are ready to resize the image to the desired dimensions.

    6

Click the mouse on the check box for "Resample Image" so that this option is checked once again. Make sure the "Constrain Proportions" box is checked, so that you can resize the image without distortion. Set the image height to the desired height, and the width will automatically change. Now you have an image at the appropriate dots per inch for printing and you will have a clean, professional-looking print.
