All film images will deteriorate over time. The best way to preserve slide images is to scan them into the computer and save them onto CDs. This allows you to preserve the original slide and store your images on longer-lasting CDs for future use. Scanning is easy, but time consuming. With a bit of preparation, these easy-to-follow steps will help you organize your work.

Determine the file size you want your scans to be. The recommended size for archiving scanned slides is 2,400 dots per inch, or "dpi." If you scan slides at a low resolution you won't be able to print good-quality images later. According to HP (Hewlett-Packard scanner manufacturer), "High-quality images do take up more space, but they will give you more options down the road." Knowing the file size is important to determine how many CDs will be necessary to store the scanned images. Make sure to have enough CDs on hand before starting. Running out of CDs in the middle of a scanning process is frustrating and time consuming.
2Wear the cotton gloves to keep fingerprints off the glass and slides. Fingerprints on the scanner glass or the slides will transfer onto the scanned image and leave a print mark. Removing these marks in an image editing program, such as Photoshop, will take more time.
3Dust off about 10 slides at a time. Use the soft cloth for more stubborn particles.
4Put slides into the slide carrier and inspect them for dust or smudge prints.
Scanner Preparation

For flatbed scanners only, remove the back plate. Flatbed scanners have a padded panel in the top lid. Grab the top handle and slide the panel out. With the back plate removed you can use the machine's back lighting to scan the slides.
6Clean the scanner glass with a solution specifically designed to clean scanners and computers.
7Create a folder on the computer for the scanned images.
Scanning
- 8
Place the filled slide carrier onto the scanner glass and close the lid.
9Open the scanner software. Under "Original," set the Document Type to "Film" and the Film Type to "Positive." Set the Output Type to "Color." Set the Resolution to the desired size. The Document and Target sizes should be set to "Original." Scanner settings vary from model to model so always check with the manufacturer's documentation.
10Click the "Preview" button. This will scan a low-resolution preview image. This allows the photographer to evaluate the image and determine if any edits are needed before scanning the image.
11Open the adjustments panel and set the desired adjustments. All cropping, sharpening and color corrections can be made from this panel.
12Click the "Scan" button. A dialog window will open. Choose the file on the computer for the Destination of the scanned images. Next, name the files and set the file Format. Click "OK."
13Repeat the scanning process for all slides.
14Burn CDs of all the scanned images.
