How to Correct ISO When Developing

When shooting film, certain lighting situations may call for "push" processing. If a photographer finds himself in a low-light situation without the necessary high-speed film, he may still set the camera's ISO, or film speed, to a higher setting. This allows for quicker shutter speeds, but results in underexposure of the film. To compensate for underexposure and create a usable negative, development time must be increased.

Instructions

    1

Take note of how many stops of underexposure the film is receiving while shooting. For example, if you are using ISO 400 film, and you set the camera's ISO to 1600, the film is underexposed, or "pushed," by two stops (400 to 800 is one stop, 800 to 1600 is another stop). This informs you that the film will have to be overdeveloped, by two stops.

    2

Gather the information you will use to compare with the development chart, including your film type and speed, the type of developer you are using, its dilution and its temperature. For example, you may have Kodak Tri-X 400 film, and be using Kodak D-76 developer, mixed at a dilution ratio of 1:1 at 68 degrees. You will need to know these factors to discover how to alter your development time.

    3

Determine the push processing development time by reviewing a development chart. Sometimes this information is printed on the film box, or it may be found on the film manufacturer's website. For each type of film and developer, development times in minutes and seconds are listed according to how many stops pushing the film needs. The time difference in pushing one stop to the next can be anywhere from 30 seconds to seven minutes depending on all the variables involved.

    4

Load your film into your tank in complete darkness. Set the darkroom timer to the adjusted push processing time. Add developer to the tank and follow your typical development procedures. Discard the developer and proceed with the remaining development steps as normal.
