RAW is not an abbreviation. It means a "raw" or "unprocessed" image. When a digital camera takes a photograph in RAW format, it records data like white balance, contrast, and saturation but does not process the image. Instead it embeds the information that an editing program will need in order to produce a high-quality print. The biggest advantage of RAW files is the ability to manipulate the file without the quality degrading. Conversely, RAW files consume a lot of space on a memory card.

Open your RAW photo in your editing software. Because many cameras use RAW, most editing applications have built-in RAW converters. In some cases you may have to download a plug-in. The menu options of the RAW editor probably look differently than an editor's normal menus, but all of the necessary tools to edit the photo are there.
2Adjust the white balance of the photo first. Even with sophisticated digital cameras, there is a likelihood that the picture's white balance is off because most people allow the camera to automatically set the balance. Depending on the lighting, the photo may look too orange or too blue. Either adjust the white balance manually or use one of preset options such as "daylight," "cloudy," "fluorescent," and "tungsten," instead. Choose the appropriate preset option or manipulate the temperature and tint options until you are satisfied with the output.
3Fix the exposure if necessary by adjusting the highlights, midtones, and shadows. Brighten highlights by increasing the exposure number. The higher the exposure number associated with the picture, the brighter the highlights will be. Manipulate shadows by increasing the black levels. The brightness option lightens the midtones.
4Sharpen the photograph by manipulating the sharpness or detail option. While sharpening does not fix blurry or out-of-focus pictures it increases the contrast between adjacent pixels adding what Photoshop User magazine Editor Scott Kelby calls "punch and impact."
5Choose your photograph's resolution (how many pixels-per-inch), color space, and size. It is best to choose the color space that your photo editing application uses since most likely that matches your printer settings. Color management is necessary because monitors and printers create colors differently. In the monitor's (RGB mode), red, green, and blue light are mixed in various combinations to make colors. The printer uses (CMYK mode) to mix cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink or toner to make the same colors. Color management software is the bridge between the two modes.
As for resolution, most web pictures are 72 or 96 ppi. Commercial quality prints are at least 300 dpi. If you print at home or at a photo kiosk, 150 dpi will probably suffice.
Your RAW editor will provide a list of print sizes available based on the quality of your camera and will tell you the largest size at which the picture won't look pixilated.
