How to Make a Home Portrait Studio

Photography is a popular hobby that has the potential to become a profitable new career. However, sometimes renting studio space is not a reasonable option because of your budget or a lack of available space in your town. An alternative is to convert a space in your home into a portrait studio. After a quick trip to your local photography store for supplies, you will be able to set up a professional workspace right in your own home.

Instructions

    1

Invest in a camera that has a built-in monitor that will allow you to see the shots as you take them. Alternatively, a camera with a video output that you can hook up to a computer monitor would suffice. This will allow you to see any adjustments that need to be made as you work.

    2

Find space in your home that would be appropriate for a studio. While virtually any room in your home can be turned into a studio, the ideal space would be a room that will not have any other purpose except serving as your studio. A studio can even be set up in a basement, attic or garage with the right supplies.

    3

Set up lighting in your space. When possible, you can use natural light from windows in the studio space, and then you can supplement natural light with artificial light in the form of strobes or hot lights. Strobes synchronize with your camera shutter, while hot lights are a consistent light source that is typically easier to work with if you are a beginning photographer.

    4

Soften your lighting sources by adding umbrellas or soft boxes. These accessories will allow you to control the amount of light in your space.

    5

Purchase a reflector to hang in your studio that will reduce the amount of shadows in your pictures. A cheaper alternative that can be used is white cardboard or poster board.

    6

Stock your studio with a variety of backgrounds. Photographers should always have a variety of colored seamless paper on hand at all times to serve as backgrounds for their portraiture.

    7

Keep props in your work space that can be used depending on the type of portrait you are creating. Teddy bears, rubber ducks and rocking horses are a few examples of props that can be used for portraits of children. Squeaky toys and balls of yarn can be used for pet photography. The possibilities are endless, and you will likely add to this stock pile as your needs constantly change.
