How to Remove Mold From Photographs

If you notice black, slimy or fuzzy spots on your photographs, they most likely have fallen victim to a mold fungus. According to Yesteryear Memories, you must first deactivate mold spores in order to properly remove them from affected photos. Learn how to remove mold and protect your photographs in the future.

Instructions

    1

Separate molded photographs from the rest of your collection. Move photos to a cool, dry, well-ventilated location, such as an uncovered shoe box, or outdoors until you have removed the mold. Separating molded photos from the rest of your collection is required in order to stop mold from spreading to unaffected photos.

    2

Determine if the mold is ready to be removed. Use a soft, clean cloth to test a portion of the mold spot. If the mold spot smears, it is active and is not ready to be removed. To deactivate mold growth on photos, Yesteryear Memories recommends allowing the affected photos to air dry in sunlight for up to two hours.
If the mold spot appears dry, white and powdery, it is inactive and ready to be removed.

    3

Remove mold outdoors. Use a couple of clean, dry, soft cloths to wipe away dried, inactive mold. Change cloths frequently and disinfect them afterward using hot water and bleach. Alternatively, use a vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter, a specialized air filter that can trap mold.
