How to Make a Skyline Backdrop

A backdrop is a background for a photo or movie. It is usually a piece of curved paper or fabric and can be white, a color, or a scene. A city skyline is the classic, elegant scene for an urban photo. Buying a backdrop can be expensive and cumbersome, as a backdrop is usually a large piece of equipment. With a ruler, paint and a 10-yard piece of canvas, you can make your own personalized backdrop of any city you'd like.

Instructions

    1

Lay your fabric flat on a clean, clear floor.

    2

Draw a horizontal line on the fabric, about one-third of the way from the bottom of the fabric, lengthwise.

    3

Draw a series of rectangles, in varying widths and heights. The widths should range from 6 to 8 inches and the heights should be from 16 to 30 inches. The rectangles should extend from edge to edge of your backdrop. Draw some in front of others so they appear to overlap.

    4

Draw triangular roofs for some of the buildings, diagonal roofs for others, and some with steeples. Keep some of the roofs horizontal for effect.

    5

Draw rectangular windows in each of the buildings, beginning 1-inch below the roof and ending 1-inch above the horizon.

    6

Use the paint and brush to fill in the sky area above the buildings. Use a combination of blue, gray and white to create a dirty medium-blue color. The color should be darker at the top of the buildings.

    7

Paint the buildings in shades of dark red, dark gray, and blue. The buildings should all be similar in color and darker than the sky.

    8

Paint the windows. Paint some black, some dark gray and others a dark yellow.

    9

Paint the water a deep bluish-gray color, a little darker than the sky. Paint to the bottom of the piece of canvas.

    10

Allow all the paint to dry.
