How to Print Black and White Photos Using Only Black Ink

Most color printers are set to print using color regardless of how the image appears on the screen. Even the slightest differences in saturation of blacks, whites and grays can appear to the computer and the printer as a color other than black or white. To avoid blue, green and cream undertones in black and white printing, you will need to set both the printer and editing program to read only black and white. There are two simple actions you can take to make sure your printer is only drawing from the black cartridge.

Instructions

    1

Set your document to grayscale mode instead of color mode inside your photo editing program. If using Photoshop, this can be accomplished by accessing the Image tab at the top of the screen, then select Mode followed by Grayscale. Even if your photograph was taken in black and white or already has been converted by some other means, it is wise to set the program to ensure that it is not recognizing any other colors. If you prefer to keep the RGB (Red Green Blue) color setting, use the channel mixer to completely desaturate the photo. To do so select "Image," "Adjustments" then "Channel Mixer." Check the Monochrome box at the bottom and click "OK." This will accomplish the same task as setting the mode to grayscale.

    2

Access the print application inside of your photo editing program when ready to print. In most programs, such as Adobe Photoshop, you can choose whether you would like the color to be managed by Photoshop or by the printer. On the right side of the print application box that appears on the screen, locate the drop-down bar labeled Color Handling. Select "Photoshop Manages Colors" from the drop-down menu and continue by pressing the "Print" button.

    3

Manage the printer color settings. When the printer's application box appears on the screen, select the Preferences or Settings button. The placement and name of this button will vary depending on your printer model. In the Preferences menu, choose the Colors or Chromatic tab and designate Print in Grayscale or Black and White. Again, the exact title will depend on your application. Once the printer settings are in place, select the quality of printer paper you are using then press "Print."
