How to Take a Good Photo of Opals

Sometimes the smallest items are the hardest to photograph. For thousands of years opals have been prized for their eye-appeal. However, the beauty of an opal can be challenging to capture with a camera. Whether you are selling opals online, creating an inventory of your opal collection or photographing opals for a client, it's critical to use proper technique to capture the splendor of an opal.

Instructions

    1
Use a light box to create professional lighting.
Use a light box to create professional lighting.

Place the opals in a light box. This special cube has soft translucent sides that diffuse light evenly and prevents reflections. A light box is a must for taking professional-quality photos. Make sure there is adequate lighting. Shine a lamp into the front opening of the light box or bring the light box outside during the day.

    2

Place a backdrop behind the opals. Pick a color backdrop that complements the opals but does not distract from them. White and black are always effective choices. You can also use a piece of poster board as a backdrop.

    3
Use a tripod to prevent camera shake.
Use a tripod to prevent camera shake.

Place your camera on a tripod to avoid unintentional shaking. Set the aperture on your camera to a low value such as 1.8 or 3.5. Zoom in on the opals and focus on them. The lower the aperture, the less detailed the out-of-focus area will be. In this particular instance, the photo will emphasize sharp and crisp opals in front of a soft background. Increase or decrease the shutter speed to match the aperture. The camera's light meter will indicate when you obtain the appropriate shutter speed. Many digital cameras have a macro photography mode that produces the same effect as lowering the aperture. If your camera is not user-adjustable or you do not feel comfortable setting the aperture and shutter speed yourself, switch to macro mode. Your camera will do all the leg work for you.

    4

Press your camera's shutter button to take the photo. Don't use a flash. Take multiple photos at a variety of angles. You can always delete photos you don't like later. Photographing the opals again will take much more time.
