One of the great advantages of Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 is the large variety of special effect filters you can apply to an image. There are hundreds of effects and filters you can apply to a photograph. You can also apply multiple effects to a single image. Each filter has multiple controls allowing you to fine-tune the filter to an image. I am always amazed that each small control change you make gives another unique rendering of the image. This literally gives you thousands of artistic choices you can make on each image. Adobe makes it easier by providing a filter gallery that provides an artistic rendering of each filter and an instant preview that allows you to make the correct choices. This article provides an overview of how to use the filter gallery.
Instructions
- 1
Open an image in Adobe Photoshop Elements. I chose an image with a central object and bright lighting to provide an idea of how the filters affects both the highlight, shadows and midtones of an image.
2From the FILTER tab select OPEN FILTER GALLERY which will open your image in the gallery window. Notice that there are six filter galleries. Each gallery contains a variety of filters and each filter has its own unique control panel. You can adjust the zoom level of the preview to help you zoom in to see the filter effect in the preview window.
3Open a gallery to select an effect. In this case we have opened the ARTISTIC gallery. As soon as we select a filter the image will render in the preview window so you can see the effect of the filter. The filter will open as a new layer which you can see displayed in the layer window at the bottom right of the panel.
4We selected the SPONGE filter and you can see the effect in the preview window. Also notice the control panel for the filter in the upper right-hand part of the panel. For this filter you can control brush size and smoothness of the application. Each change you make will cause the preview to render. Once you like the image simply click OK. The filter will be applied to your image in the Photo Editor where you can save it under a different file name.
5In this example we have used the GLOWING EDGE filter. Notice the difference in the filter control panel. For this filter we can alter edge width, brightness and smoothness of the image.
6You can also select filters and use them from the special effects panel at the right-hand side of the full image editor. These are the same filters that you see in the filter gallery, but are conveniently located for easy use. You can also choose backgrounds, borders and bevels from this special effects panel.
