The resolution of an image generally determines its quality. The higher the resolution, the sharper and clearer images are. Digital images consist of multiple dots (pixels). The resolution of an image is determined by the number of pixels or dots per inch (DPI). Resolutions are also identified by the height and width of an image. On a PC or a Mac, use built-in tools to determine the resolution of your images.

Instructions

Windows 7

    1

Select the image you want to view the resolution for. If you are unsure of the location of your image, click the "Start" button in the left corner of your screen and click "Computer" to open Windows Explorer. Browse your computer for the image you are looking for by typing its name in the search box.

    2

Right-click on the image file and click "Properties." The image properties window launches.

    3

Click the "Details" tab. Locate the image resolution in DPI.

Mac OS X

    4

Locate the file you want to view the resolution for. Click "Finder" on the desktop if you are unsure of the location of your image. Type the name of the image in the search box. Mac Finder displays the search results.

    5

Right-click the image and click "Get info."

    6

Click the drop-down arrow in the "More info" category. Read the image resolution.
