Baby Photography Ideas for Fun

If you love photography and have a new baby in your life, there are many creative ways you can satisfy your inner shutterbug while creating photos of the baby to cherish for a lifetime. All you need are some props, a location and a helper or two.

Theme Pictures

Decide on a theme for your baby pictures. It could be a personal interest or hobby. For instance, if you love the Old West, you could cover the baby's diaper with a bandanna, add a toy six-shooter and covered wagon and use a sepia-colored filter for an old-fashion feel. If you love art you could give the baby a paintbrush to hold and put a blank canvas and palette beside him. Later, in your photo editing software, you could posterize the photo to make it into an Andy Warhol look-alike. To set up your themed shoot, cover a baby carrier with fabric, set the baby into the carrier (with someone nearby to keep the baby from falling) and set your props around the baby.

Fabric

Fabric can be a fun prop to play with in baby pictures. Wrap the baby in Indian-themed fabric for a mini sarong. Fluff tulle or feathered boas around the baby for a cloud-like effect. Even scarves can be used as cute baby-size togas.

Outdoors

    Toddler Playing in Snow

Outdoor baby pictures can be fun with older babies. Pictures of baby playing in the snow for the first time, playing in a pile of colorful leaves or toddling in and out of the surf can make charming pictures. Make sure to use a polarizing filter to make the colors more vibrant. Also, make sure that the sun is to the side of the baby. This way the baby won't be squinting and you will get glare-free pictures. If the weather is bad, you can create the outdoors effect inside. Place houseplants or silk plants around the baby for a jungle feel. (Just make sure the baby doesn't try to eat them.)
