Backlight art refers to playing with the effect of shadow and lighting. In photography, when foreground objects are shot with a hot light source in the background, the objects become dark shadows. This effect, called backlighting, occurs because the only light source that is entering the cameras lens is from the back of the object, in place of the front. This, in turn, creates a silhouette of the object that is in front of the light source, producing the backlit effect.

Place the image that will be edited into a desktop file folder. Right-click on the desktop or press the "Control" key on the keyboard while clicking on the left mouse button, and select "New Folder." Rename the folder by double-clicking under it and typing the project name. Drag the image file it into the folder and drop it in.
2Open the image in the design program. Launch the program by clicking on the program icon located in the "Start" menu or the desktop of the computer screen. After initiating, select "File," then "Open" from the toolbar menu at the top of the screen. Select the file from the window and click "OK" or "Open" upon completion.
3Create a copy of the image to prevent making permanent changes on the original layer. Select "Layer" from the toolbar menu, then "Duplicate Layer" to make a copy. The new layer will appear in the layer palette on the right side of the screen.
4Select the "Magic Wand" or "Polygonal Lasso" tool from the tool palette, and select only the areas of the image that will be darkened by clicking on them or outlining them. Click on "Image," then "Adjustments" from the toolbar, followed by "Hue and Saturation." Move the sliders on "Lightness" and "Saturation" to the left to create a silhouette effect.
5Return to the layer palette, and click "Opacity" and "Fill" options to further adjust the selected area. Click on the arrows on the options to reveal the slider, and move them to the left to adjust the shadow amount. Select the background to enhance the brightness of it by clicking on "Select," then "Inverse." This will create a selection border around the background.
6Brighten the background by selecting "Image," then "Adjustments" from the toolbar menu. Select "Curves" from the list that appears, and place the cross hair on the line. Click and drag the cross hair up or down to slightly brighten or darken the background. Click "OK" to accept the changes.
7Deselect everything by clicking "Control" or "Apple," then the "D" key on the keyboard. The selected object will appear as a silhouette, while the background remains the same. Save the file by selecting "File," then "Save" from the toolbar menu. Name the file and choose a destination to save it in, then click "OK" upon completion.
