In studio photography, softboxes soften the shadows cast from a light source onto the photographer's subject. You can use a softbox with a flash or with continuous lighting. Amateur and professional photographers often make their own softboxes from a wide spectrum of materials, ranging from cardboard to aluminum sheeting. You can make a lightweight softbox from foam board and other materials you may already have in your studio or home in 30 to 45 minutes.

Cut four trapezoids from the foam core sheets with a 36-inch base and a 4-inch top with the utility knife. Use the straight edge to make sure the cuts are perfectly straight. The trapezoid's angles must be 53 degrees.
2Place two trapezoids on your work surfaces with the 36-inch wide bases on the surface. Lean them together so that two of the angled sides touch. Run a strip of electric tape along one of these angled sides. Fold it over so that it reaches onto the other trapezoid. Run another strip of electric tape along the strip's sides for extra support. That makes a total of three strips of electric tape. Looking down, the two trapezoids form an L-shape.
3Place another foam board trapezoid against one of the free ends of the L-shape so that looking down, you have a U-shape. Tape the angled sides together with three strips of electric tape. Add the last foam board trapezoid and place its angled sides against the softbox's two remaining free angled sides. Attach each angled side with three strips of electric tape. Looking down, you have a square. From the side, the softbox looks like a flattened pyramid that is missing the top.
4Spray a coat of spray adhesive on the softbox's inside. Cover the inside completely with aluminum foil.
5Cut a 36-inch square of diffusion paper. Run a strip of electric tape around the edges of the softbox's 36-inch wide side. Place the diffusion paper on the softbox's 36-inch side. Press the electric tape onto the diffusion paper.
