A film camera normally has a lens to make an image on film. With a pin-hole camera, a tiny hole replaces the lens. Old-fashioned photos associated with grandparents or great-grandparents were taken with early cameras similar to pin-hole cameras. These early cameras transferred reflected light onto film or paper, and images appeared much softer than digital pictures of today. While there are several forms of pin-hole cameras, one of the simplest to construct uses a coffee can and photo paper.

Glue a piece of black felt or paper to the inside of the coffee can lid. Make sure the entire inside area is covered so no light can enter. Glue black paper to the inside of the can to prevent refraction.
2Perforate the side of the metal can with the ice pick, making a very small hole halfway up from the bottom.
3Take a 4-inch strip of electrical tape and fold one end over upon itself by one-half inch, creating a tab. Cover the coffee can hole with the electrical tape with at least 1-inch on each side. Place at least one perpendicular piece of electrical tape over the non-tab side to hold the tape in place.
4In a dark room, place one sheet of unexposed fast photographic paper, emulsion side facing inward opposite the pin-hole. Use darkroom paper that requires immersion in chemicals to develop, not paper made for printers that use ink cartridges. Place the lid on the can tightly.
5Expose the paper by lifting the electrical tape tab and allowing light in through the hole. Expose for at least 2 minutes. Use modeling clay to keep the can from moving. Replace the electrical tape, remove the exposed paper, and develop it in a darkroom.
