Transferring a photo to canvas creates an elegant image that can be stretched just like a painting. The process is no more complicated than printing to any other paper type. Photo canvas paper is readily available at most office-supply stores and is available in many varieties online. A flatbed scanner is necessary if you are working from original photographs, but downloading images from a digital camera will shorten the process.
Instructions
- 1
Turn on the scanner before opening your imaging software or built-in scanner software, since some programs do not recognize the scanner unless it is turned on first. Clean the glass scanner surface with a dust-free cloth and cleaner to prevent unwanted marks on your images.
2Open your scanner software or imaging software. With imaging software, the scanner is often located by clicking "File" and then "Import" and then selecting the name of the scanner from the list.
3Place the photograph face-down onto the glass and close the lid. Click "Preview" to make a general scan of everything on the scanner glass. Crop to the image by adjusting the bounding box.
4Consider whether you will stretch your canvas onto wood and whether you want the image to print onto the sides of the canvas or not. Based on this, enter in the size you would like the final print to be and select a resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch). Click the "Scan" button to make your final scan and save the file.
5Open the file in your imaging software. Make any adjustments to contrast and color as necessary or wanted. Select "Print" from the "File" menu. Choose "Page Options" or "Print Options," depending on your software model. This will bring up a dialog box specific to your printer.
6Choose the paper size, orientation and the source. The size will likely be legal, 8.5 by 11 inches. The orientation refers to whether the image is tall (portrait) or long (landscape). The source is either a sheet or roll of paper.
7Select the type of medium being used. The instruction sheet with your photo canvas will likely suggest a certain medium based on your printer manufacturer. Purchasing paper made by the same manufacturer as your printer will reduce possible problems, and some experimentation with different media choices may be necessary.
8Select the highest print quality available. This option is known under various terms depending on the manufacturer, but will usually be the top or last quality in a list of options.
9Load the canvas into the printer on its correct side as explained by its instruction sheet. Click "Print." If the print has problems with its contrast or color, return to the file in the imaging software. Make the necessary adjustments and repeat the process as needed.
