The Importance of the Framing of Ideas in Photography

Framing an idea in photography can make the difference between a good or bad quality photograph. The quality of a photograph hinges on communicating an idea and its meaning to a viewer. For example, a well-framed idea enhances the beauty or emotion of the photograph conveyed to the viewer.

Composition

Framing the idea is necessary to determine the overall composition of the photo. The composition of the photograph refers to the use of space within the picture, where each item is placed in the available space. How a photograph is composed effects communication from the photographer to the eye of the viewer.

Drawing Focus

The focal point of a photograph is the main idea of the photograph. What happens around that photograph serves to inform the viewer about that main idea. Once the photographer understands what focal point best expresses her main idea, she can compose the photograph to articulate this idea further.

Beauty

The visual nature of photography often serves to communicate beauty, but it isn't enough to take a picture of a beautiful person, place or thing. The photography must understand why this thing is beautiful and compose the shot to enhance that beauty. For example, a photographer may see a woman's unique facial features as being particularly striking in beauty. Once he has framed this idea, he can employ background, color and an internal frame, such as the woman's hands framing her face, to convey this idea to the viewer.

Emotion

A photograph can have an emotional impact on a viewer. The emotional response a viewer has to the images in a photograph can change the way a viewer thinks about herself, an event, an issue or a person. The photographer can only achieve this impact by first framing an idea of why this image would be compelling. She can then use depth of field, contrasting colors and viewpoint to communicate the emotional nature of the image.
