How to Use Edupe to Copy Negatives

Kodak offers a product called Edupe, which is a duplicating film intended to take copies of slides from original Kodachrome or Ektachrome negatives. Edupe film has a different color contrast and shadow ratio because it is not supposed to be used as film for original snapshots but rather to be taken over the negative slides. As such, the different color contrast and shadow ratio helps to reproduce the original colors and tones from the Kodachrome or Ektachrome negatives in order to create effective duplicates.

Instructions

    1

Load the Edupe film into the film camera. Depending on the type of camera you are using, set the shutter speed to around one second or one-eighth of a second.

    2

Set the flash setting on the camera to manual. This prevents the flash from going off automatically, giving the photographer more control.

    3

Position the lighting source you will use to take the duplicates of the negatives. Place the lighting source, such as a lamp or spotlight, directly over the work area or off to the side, depending on the type of effect you are going for with the duplicates.

    4

Identify the original film to be duplicated by Edupe if you are unsure whether the film is Kodachrome or Ektachrome. Kodachrome film has a raised image, known as the "relief image" on one side of the film. Ektachrome film is smooth and flat on both sides. It is important to distinguish between Kodachrom and Ektachrome film so that you know how to adjust the filtration.

    5

Adjust the filtration according to the electronic flash source. For instance, if the electronic flash source is 5500K, or standard, follow the general filter instructions that are printed on the box. However, any change below or above the 5500K color temperature requires you to increase the filtration with gelatin filters. Place the gelatin filters between the transparencies and the light source.

    6

Adjust the color balance. This is accomplished by adding or removing filters to change the tones and hues in the duplicate image. Use as few filters as possible to achieve your desired color balance.

    7

Take the duplicate shots of the original negatives with the Edupe film. Line up the edges of the negatives into the frame so that all you see is the image, rather than the sides of the negatives.

    8

Process the Edupe film in Kodak Chemicals, Process E-6. Processing should be done as soon as possible after the film is used. If you cannot get to the processing step right away, store the unprocessed film in a refrigerator in a temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
