Ideas for Displaying Photos to Sell

There are a variety of ways to display photos to get potential buyers to take notice of your work. Photos ranging from the very formal to the artistic to the casual can sell. Market your photos depending on the type of images you capture, who you intend them for and how you present them. Here are some ideas to display your photos.

Framing

The same image is shown with a classic white frame.

The classic, artistic look generally can work well for most images. This entails taking an 8.5x11-inch photo and mounting it in a much larger frame, say an 11x14 or 12x16-inch frame. Mount the photo in mounting boards, a full one behind and the front one cut professionally to display the photo. Then place it in the frame. Any color mounting board will do, but the classic is white. White signifies nothingness to the viewer and centers all his attention on the photo itself. Another way to do this is to use a smaller photo, such as a 4x6 in an 8x10 frame. Sometimes, the smaller photo will attract more attention.

Photoshop 'Frames'

The image is shown with Photoshop's Photo Corners Action.

You can forgo mounting the photo by using a frame in Adobe Photoshop. Go to Window>Actions. In the Actions palette, click the button in the upper right to add Frames to the Actions. There are a variety of frames from wood to brushed aluminum to photo corners. The action will place a frame image around your photo. Go to Layers>Flatten Layers and then print. Now you can place your already "framed" image into a real frame. Orr, to give viewers an optical illusion, s hang the photo itself without a physical frame.

Location

Location also has a lot to do with selling photos. If you have an exhibit in a gallery and make it obvious the photos are for sale, you may sell some. If you don't have an exhibit, you can find a caf or bookstore or other commercial establishment that may be willing to display your photos. Consider the places you like because chances are like-minded people also will go there. Restaurants and cafs may be eager to display your photos because it gives them free art to display and it encourages local photographers.
