How to Fix Blur in Photos
- 1
Open the blurry photo in an image editor in your choice of photo editing software. Although the interface of each program will differ slightly, if you are using a relatively good quality editor all the features should still be present.
2Edit your photo normally. Make any edits to the photos color, lighting and other aspects before you attempt to correct the blur. This will allow you to keep as much detail in the image as you possibly can. You will inevitably lose some pixels during the sharpening process, however, if you pre-edit your image then you can keep this loss to a minimum.
3Copy the layer so that you have a replica to edit and the original as a back-up. Turn off the visibility of the original layer and take the option to lock it if you can. This will allow you to focus on editing the copied layer and prevent you from making unwanted changed to the original. Select the new layer to begin editing.
4Open the Sharpen menu from the drop down list under Filter. Remember the interface may differ slightly between programs. This will then present you with a number of options. Choose the option Sharpen. This will then automatically sharpen the image. You should be able to see a reduction in blur and this step may even be enough if there is only a small amount of blur is present.
5Use the Sharpen Edges tool if the blur is still present. This should make the edges of you image appear sharper by increasing the contrast in the darker tones around the edge. As a result of the increasing contrast this may present a significant change in your image.
6Click on the Smart Sharpening option if you want to edit further. This tool will allow you to edit in much more detail. You will have more control over which parts of your image that you sharpen. You can remove previous blurring effects and choose to sharpen shadows or highlights. This filter is good for areas with different tonal ranges such as faces.
7Use the Unsharp Mask tool. This tool allows you to adjust the area that is being sharpened as well as the degree of sharpening that takes place. Adjust the level of sharpening in the editing window until you see the desired improvement.
8Experiment with the different sharpening options until you achieve adequate image sharpness. The loss of pixels may result in some visible noise on the image, however.
