Create multiple books or galleries for very diverse portfolios. If you shoot portraits, landscapes, street scenes and fine art nudes, those should all be separated into individual elements of your portfolio. Clumping everything together can cause the viewer to get confused about your style and message. You can separate your sections by leaving a page blank in your printed portfolio or create multiple galleries for an online portfolio.
2Keep specific shoots and jobs together and sequential. If you did an editorial, a series of portraits or photographs of the same or similar subjects, make sure you keep those in order when laying out your portfolio. Multiple shots for one shoot are still only considered one work element, even if you have six images in the series. Keeping like shots together will help prevent your portfolio from being all over the place.
3Use color and subject matter to make your layout flow. A strong portfolio has a coherent and cohesive quality. Look for similar colors, tonal ranges and composition when you layout images within their respective groups. When you put the groups in order, look for corresponding color tones again. If your portfolio contains black and white images, you can use the overall tonal range to create a flow.
4Begin and end with your strongest images, with a few in between for good measure. You want to make a good first impression and leave a lasting impression on anyone who views your portfolio. You know that certain images in your portfolio are stronger than others - you can use these to draw the viewer in and keep his or her attention.
