How to Learn Digital SLR Photography

Digital SLR photography has seen an explosion of interest in first-time SLR buyers because of the highly effective and modestly priced entry-level DSLR cameras now on the market. These new cameras offer a wide range of manual controls and settings that allow the photographer to capture that perfect shot. And with these new cameras comes many technological improvements that make it easier than ever to learn the tricks of digital SLR photography. Understanding the basic components of digital photography will allow you improve the quality of every picture you take.

Instructions

    1

Read the owner's manual for your digital SLR camera. These guides offer useful tips specific to your camera's model and will give you general knowledge about the modes and functions of the different buttons on your camera.

    2

Experiment with the top, adjustable knob that allows you to set the camera to "M" (manual mode), "AV" (aperture setting mode) or "S" (shutter speed priority mode). These are the three basic modes that will allow you to manually control the light, film speed, shutter speed, focus and composition for every picture, so you will need to learn these different manual settings to take control of your DLSR camera.

    3

Adjust your ISO speed. This is in reference to the film speed that was used in film cameras. A good setting to always strive for is 200 ISO. The higher the ISO speed you go up, the grainier the picture will become. But sometimes, in low light without a flash, you will need to use a higher ISO.

    4

Watch your built-in automatic light meter and make sure it is always near the middle. Balance this meter by adjusting your aperture setting and shutter speed. If you set the shutter speed under 1/60th of a second, you will probably need a tripod.

    5

Use the manual lens focus option to fine-tune the focus and make sure your intended subject is clear.

    6

Experiment and take lots of pictures of the same subjects using many different settings. This is vital in understanding how your camera works in different lighting conditions.

    7

Use a notepad and take notes whenever you find something that is working particularly well or poorly.

    8

Learn the basics of one of the professional photograph software editing programs to enhance all of your pictures.
