Themed portraits can be fun at parties, especially if the party itself has a theme. If you have been tasked to take pirate pictures at an event, the task may seem daunting at first. It is much simpler when you break it down into small parts: background, set dressing, props and costumes. With a small amount of work you can create a pirate scene that will be the highlight of the evening.

Wad up an old, white bedsheet into a ball. Tie several ropes around the ball to keep its shape, then dunk the entire thing in a large bucket containing strong tea.
2Remove the bedsheet from the bucket after five minutes, then wring it out and allow it to dry. Hang it against a wall to simulate an old sail.
3Add other background elements such as hanging ropes, barrels and crates, bottles of iced tea with "rum" labels and a treasure chest filled with gold-colored plastic coins. If you have access to a pirate flag, tack it to the wall above the sheet so that it hangs into the picture.
4Dress the your models in pirate costumes. Rent several mix-and-match clothing items from a costume shop, allowing a variety of costume options with a limited amount of clothing. This is especially important if you are photographing many people at a party or event.
5Offer some extra costume pieces and props such as eye patches, a hook, a fake parrot, swords and clip-on earrings and other jewelry.
6Instruct the people who you are photographing to get into the pirate spirit. They can glare at the camera, clash swords together, hold a plastic dagger in their teeth or strike the famous rum pirate pose.
7Take several pictures of each person to ensure that everyone has at least one that comes out well. Use available light if possible: a flash may blow out the color and make the picture look flat.
