How to use Nikon ViewNX

How to use Nikon ViewNX. If you have a new Coolpix camera from Nikon you are fortunate, since it comes with a piece of software that will enable you to begin organizing and correcting your images. You should also take some time to see if you need any other software since ViewNX is a very complete package. It works with Nikon Transfer and allows you to sort, rate and manage your images as well as basic image corrections. So before you run to spend a lot of cash on Photoshop, use ViewNX for a while and see if it meets your needs. Read on to discover the basics.

Instructions

    1

After installing Nikon ViewNX connect your camera to the computer and open ViewNX. Launch NIKON TRANSFER from the FILE menu. After importing your images they will show up as a recent event. You can then rename and move the event and select an individual image.

    2

Check the software preferences. Here you can specify the default color profile and device and printer profiles. You can also select how the image is viewed and previewed. You can set up specific XML fields and adjust the naming conventions for files imported into the library.

    3

The metadata tab allows you to manage your image. You can see the image data from your Nikon camera, including all the exposure information, resolution and camera type. You can also assign star values, tags, keywords, locations and descriptions. You can sort your database, so for example, you could sort all your Five Star pictures to put together a portfolio piece. This flexibility allows you to create a personalized image management system to fit your needs.

    4

The QUICK FIX tab allows you to correct basic image properties like white balance, sharpness, contrast and color. If you need more editing control over the image you can launch the Picture Control Utility by clicking on the button.

    5

The picture control utility gives you complete image editing capabilities. There is even a control for adjusting sharpening. You can load in "picture controls," which are really color profiles. You can also create your own profile and save it by making curve adjustments. Use the eyedroppers to select and fix the highlight and shadow and save the curve under a unique name. You will then find it under the picture controls when you scroll through the list. This is a powerful piece of software provided for free with the purchase of a Nikon camera. People may tell you that you HAVE to get Photoshop, but why not try ViewNX for a while? It's free, so what have you got to lose?
