How to Scan an APS Film

APS, or Advanced Photo System, film is designed to deliver high-quality photographs when used with an APS camera. This film can be used for fast-action shots and close-ups, as well as for panoramic views in both bright- and low-light conditions. Scanning APS film is similar to scanning any type of developed camera film negatives. You can use either an APS film scanner, which comes with a built-in photo negative holder, or an APS adapter, which can be used with any flatbed scanner. It's easy to turn your APS negatives into digital images.

Instructions

    1

Develop your APS film. Do this either at a photo lab or in your own lab.

    2

Separate the negatives. Cut them apart if necessary.

    3

Turn on the scanner and/or install it using provided software if you haven't done so already. Your computer will give you further instructions, telling you when the scanner is ready for scanning. If you're using a film scanner adapter, you'll need to install that as well.

    4

Place the piece of APS film in the film scanner or the film scanner adapter, depending on what you are using.

    5

Change the settings. This will depend on whether the film is color or black and white. Be sure to indicate that APS film negatives are being scanned. Change the dpi to 2000, 3000 or 4000, as required for APS film.

    6

Click "scan" once all the settings are correct. Once the scanner finishes scanning, check to see if you are satisfied with the image quality and overall look of the photographs. If not, repeat the steps.

    7

Save your images on your computer as .tiff or .jpeg. Edit or crop as desired.
